Andy Gregory was
born in Wigan and had played
junior rugby league in the
town before signing for Widnes.
He had a successful time at Naughton Park before making
the short trip to Warrington in the mid
eighties. Wigan finally signed
Andy from Warrington in 1986 for a
reported £130,000 fee and he
helped lay the foundations for Wigan’s
monopoly of all the major trophies.
Andy
played a
big part in the inaugural World Club
Championship win over Manly in 1987 and although only small in height
he
dominated games on the field from scrum half. In his time at Wigan he
won five
Challenge Cup Winners medals, two John
Player winners medals and two Lancashire Cup winners’
medals. Andy also won 16 Great Britain caps whilst he
was a Wigan player to add
to the 10 he won as a Widnes and Warrington player. Andy
was able to make the
transformation from club rugby to international rugby with ease and in
his
finest performance for GB was in 1988 when he was man of the match in
the third
Test in Brisbane, helping Great Britain to their first
win over the Aussies in 16
starts. Andy also
won the Lance Todd
Trophy twice for match winning displays in the Challenge Cup final,
against Halifax in 1988 and Warrington in 1990.

Andy was transferred to Leeds in 1992 and finished his playing days as player-coach at Salford. He led Salford to the First Division Championship in 1995 but twelve Super League clubs had already been chosen for 1996, but in 1996 he led the Reds to their second consecutive championship and a place in the Super League. Salford
started off
well in 1997 and topped the
Super League and also qualified for the Semi-Finals of the Challenge
Cup. In
1998 he took Salford to the
Semi-Finals. But Salford struggled for
most of the season and
started off 1999 in trouble again, rooted to the bottom of the league.
In May
1999 Andy left Salford by mutual
consent to concentrate on his
pub business in Wigan, also in the
same year, he was nominated
as a new member of the Wigan Hall of Fame.
