Regret to Announce the Death of John R. Gavan

Obituary by his great friend Alan Bond

John R. Gavan's ashes were laid to rest today in Beechworth, Victoria, Australia. John died as the result of a massive stroke on 25/01/07

John Gavan, born in Wallasey near Liverpool on 15/09/38, attended Wallasey Grammar School for 5 years and later played rugby for New Brighton Rugby Club NBFC (RU). As a young man he was part of a group of ex Wallasey Grammar School characters who started clubs in Wallasey such as La Boheme and The Kraal. In his mid 20's John decided to travel around the world and spent some years living in Canada

He returned for a spell in the UK before settling in his beloved Australia. During his travels John met and married Diana, an Australian with whom he had two sons, Sebastian and Alex.

John lived some years on the Hawkesbury River North of Sydney He built the house from scratch and it was typical of his loner type instincts that it was only accessible by boat. He liked to be self sufficient and grew all his own "veggies" and collected rainwater from his roof for his household and irrigation needs.

It was the death of Sebastian in a motorcycle accident, in recent times, that probably contributed to John's demise. He took it very badly and was deeply distressed. John is survived by Alex to whom we all send our condolences.

John Gavan was a truly wonderful Merseyside character who never forgot his roots and friends. He was loved by many for his fun and his mental and physical attractiveness. He is sorely missed by many.
