New Brighton 2nd XV Record Home Win Against Preston Grasshoppers 4th XV

Having such strength in depth Preston Grasshoppers have the luxury of being able to field a 4th XV in the 1st Division of the Miller Homes League while both their 2nd and 3rd XV’s play in the Premiership. The 4th XV main strength is in a big heavy pack with a number of canny older heads. This was a good win for New Brighton which puts them up to 2nd in the League.

New Brighton went ahead on 10 minutes when Vinnie Sutton finished off a nice handling move with a unconverted try wide out.

Preston used their weight to bring themselves level with a try scored from a rolling maul which again was unconverted and went ahead late in the second quarter with another close quarters try to bring the score to 5 – 10. The Blues were playing well, keeping the ball in play and avoiding heavy contact with the Preston pack and on the half time whistle their patience was rewarded when Sean Ellis made a break to bring the scores to all square.

New Brighton moved into the lead with a Jim Yarranton penalty goal which Preston countered with a forwards rolling maul try on 50 minutes to make the score 13 – 15.

Jim Yarranton was again on target with a penalty goal 6 minutes later and with their noses in front the Blues took control. Adam Whatling made the break through to put Dan Searle in for a try on the hour and Gareth Simpson rounded of the proceedings a few minutes before full time with a good try converted by Yarranton.

Final Score: New Brighton 28 – 15 Preston Grasshoppers .
