SPORTSMAN'S DINNER

held in the Marquee on Wedneday May 17th

Photos by Phil Broster and Beryl Bowes

The eighteenth Sportsman’s Dinner was once again the social/entertainment event of the year. Over 300 people enjoyed good food, good wine and excellent entertainment in the elegance of the Marquee. Many thanks to the organisers Tom Calderbank, Harry Leyland, Alan Kettel, Beryl Bowes and Peter Torgersen for their efforts on behalf of New Brighton Rugby Club. Here are some images of a superb evening’s entertainment.
Our MC for the last five years, Willy Miller, used his searing wit to maintain superb order throughout. He also conducted the auction of several very collectable memorabilia with characteristic aplomb.
The main speakers were very different but complemented each other particularly well. Liverpool’s own John Conteh, Olympic and world boxing champion, regaled us with tales of his youth and boxing career with typical scouse humour. His manic act of playing the punch drunk boxer was so convincing that some were not so sure…
Eric Jones’ deadpan delivery and dry wit was a total contrast. His material was wide and varied, using not only his police experiences but having a go at other sections of the community such as solicitors, accountants, academics and golfers. The evening flew by and soon we had nothing but ourselves to entertain us. Some left the marquee at a very late hour…
