THE PRESIDENT

Peter Hartley

Aged 70, married to Valerie for 45 years with two grown up children. Educated at St Joseph`s College Blackpool and Alsager College of Higher Education specialising in the teaching of Physical Education. Commenced teaching at Pensby Boys Sc hool in 1959. Moved to British Columbia, Canada where he taught at Fort St James . Returned to England to take up a position of head of PE at Wellington School Bebington an Independent Day School for Boys. where he remained until 1973.

Played Rugby,Cricket and Tennis at School and at College and turned out for New Brighton Junior Sides from 1961-68.A keen tennis player at Prenton Lawn Tennis Club, he took up Squash in 1952 at Birkenhead SRC for whom he played in NW Counties Division 1. County Squash Secretary for Cheshire, he played for the County 1st Team in the Inter County Championships.

Trained as a Coach by England Squash in 1967,he qualified as Referee in 1971, he turned Squash professional in 1973 and was appointed English National Squash Coach in 1974.He move to Hong Kong in 1979 to take up a position as Head Squash Coach at the Hong Kong Sports Institute and National Coaching Director for the HKSRA. In 1986 he was appointed Sports Development Manager of the Institute. Member of the International Squash Federation Rules Sub Committee from 1983-88 he was also Honorary Chairman of the ISF Coaching Sub Committee from 1988-90. In Squash he has travelled widely throughout the World coaching International Players and Teams,training Coaches Referees and promoting Squash Development.

Since returning to the Wirral in 1988 he has been active in retirement. A past President of Birkenhead SRA. Hon. Secretary of New Brighton FC, Executive Committee Member Birkenhead Conservative Association, trustee and director Wirral Local Agenda 21 where he chairs the Waste and Recycling Topic group.

In his spare time he plays Golf at Wirral Ladies Club and occasionally turns out or he veterans teams there.

In the past 7 years he has been an active supporter of Squash and Rugby at New Brighton and looks forward to working to maintaining the high standards achieved and encouraging the Community Development of the Club.
