Bright Start for New Brighton's Blue Birds |
|
For the third year in succession, the Bluebirds' League season kicks off with a match versus old rivals, Manchester, although this year, we travel to Cheadle, on 16 September. At least, their pitch should be in a playable condition, in early autumn. Newcomers, Ashton-upon-Mersey are our first visitors, on 23 September. Sam Walker replaces Tansy Stewart, as Skipper for the 2001-02 campaign, as we aim to improve upon last year's Runners-Up position, in Division 3 (NW). The youngest of three sisters to have played regularly for the Club, No. 8, Sam was a member of the North West Counties squad, which reached last season's National Final, along with flanker, Emma Bolton. Coach, Pete Buckles has been impressed with the levels of attendance & enthusiasm, seen at the regular Wednesday evening training sessions, in the build-up for the new season. "It's been great to see some new faces, training alongside our established squad members. Although we've had players with proven Club & Representative experience training with our girls and considering a move to Reeds Lane, there's always a welcome for complete beginners. Emma Bolton was playing for the County within 12 months of taking up the game."
We also have a women's squad entering the Ruthin 10s Tournament, over the Bank Holiday weekend, to sharpen up their team play, in preparation for the new season's challenge. Any women wishing to give Women's Rugby a try, should come along to Reeds Lane, on a Wednesday evening, or ring Guy Hughes, in the Club Office, any morning. |

Bluebirds Announce Spectacular New Signing England World Cup Wing Threequarter, Jayne Molyneux has signed up for New Brighton Bluebirds Women's XV. Sports Development Officer, Jayne earned 28 Full Caps for England, as a Waterloo player. Now living in Moreton, Jayne wants to put something back into the Game, at Grassroots Level, as a player and Assistant Coach to Pete Buckles. "Playing Premiership & International rugby was a great experience, but it requires a full time commitment to training and travelling. Waterloo's nearest away fixture is at Worcester! I've been really impressed with the girls' attitude & skills levels, at New Brighton, as well as the Club's back-up & support for the Women's game." The new season's fixture list has been amended by the RFUW. The season now kicks off on Sunday, 9 Sept, at Manchester, with the first home game on 16.9.01 v newcomers, Ashton-on-Mersey. |
