New Brighton's Womens team moved into second place in their NW3 Challenge League on Sunday 11th Feb. when they won a closely contested match against their local rivals Waterloo 2nds at Blundellsands last Sunday. The Bluebirds went across the water to turn round a 19 - 0 defeat at Reeds Lane earlier this year and were in confident mood after beating Colne and Nelson 66 - 0 in their previous match. After about 15 mins of severe pressure in the opening quarter the Blues broke clear of their 22 for the first time and immediately put Waterloo on the back foot. A break from the scrum by Mel Roberts made the initial ground and in the ensuing tackle made the ball available for Skipper Tansy Stewart to touch down for the first score of the match. Sam Walker converting. Waterloo's reply came on the stroke of half time when, against the run of play, Naomi O'Hagen found herself clear and ran 60 metres to score under the posts. The second half progressed with the Blues on top though some spirited defence from Waterloo kept them at bay until Emma Bolton playing at No 8 picked up from the base of the scrum and touched down. The conversion was missed resulting in a 12 - 5 win for the bluebirds. |

Away fixture with Colne and Nelson Cancelled The New Brighton Blue Birds had to settle for a training session this weekend, following the postponement of their game at Colne and Nelson due to a waterlogged pitch. While the rest of the team looked for a friendly next weekend, number 8 and pack leader Sam Walker is looking foreward to making her debut in the Cheshire and South Lancashire county squad. She became the first player from the Blue Birds to be selected for a senior representative side. Sam, who is a nurse at V.C.H. hospital, has been playing rugby since 1997 and has been with New Brighton since they formed in 1998. Along with her two sisters Sue and Sharon, she has established herself as a regular in the Blue Birds squad in that time. Sam made all 13 league starts last season and has yet to miss a game she made her playing debut two years ago against Vagabonds. She is noted on the rugby pitch for putting the hard hitting and solid tackling in, especially on opposition half backs and flankers. Sam has also proved that she has a talent with the boot as she slotted over numerous conversions during the last league campaign. Her 100% effort and detrmination has now been rewarded with a place in the full county squadfollowing trials at Altringham and Kersal in September. The competion starts on Sunday when the county squad travels to Fleetwood to take on North Lancashire. Sam is appealing to local businesses to help her during this seasons county campaign. it is hoped that local businesses will come forward with the offer of sponsoring her kit, ie shorts, shirt and socks. If anyone would like to help with offers of sponsorship, they can ring chairman and club administrator Guy Hughes at the club on 0151 677 2442.

New Brighton 45
- 10 Manchester Sun. 1/10/2000 The Blue Birds got the season off to the best possible start, when they beat Manchester 45 - 10 at Reeds Lane on Sunday. The Blue Birds had inflicted the damage in the opening 30 minutes, which had seen them take a 33 point lead over their opponents. The ladies showed their dominance from the first whistle, as within 2 minutes winger Alice Muspratt had spun the ball wide which allowed centre Amanda Booth to cross for the first try of the game, which was converted by Paula berry. The score line had doubled less than 5 minutes later when paula berry spotted gaps in the manchester defence to cross for the second try of the game. With only a few more minutes on the clock, the Blue Birds had added another 14 points to the score line when Jenny Roberts and Captain Tansy Stewart scored from successive kick offs. With paula berry converting both tries the score was now 26 - 0. The 5th try from New Brighton came from a solid display of attacking rugby led by Amanda Booth and forward Beck Mc Quillan, which allowed hooker Jenny Roberts a clear run for the line, to cross for her 2nd try of the game, Paula Berry was again on target taking the score to 33 - 0 with only 25 minutes of rugby played. Manchester's 1st try came late in the first half, from which they benefitted from New brighton conceding numerous penaltieson their own line which enabled the Manchester forwards to eventually break the Blue Bird's defence to score theior first try of the game. It was, however, fitting that the final try of the first half should got to the team who had dominated it, New Brighton. Amanda Booth finished a move which was started back in their own half by Sarah Linley who broke right through the centre of the Manchester defence to allow Amanda to cross for her 2nd try of the day. When paula berry added the conversion the score line read 40 - 5 to thr Blue Birds. The second half saw a more spirited performance from the Manchester side as they tried to claw their way back into the game which resulted in some moments of strong attacking and defensive play from them. It did however see both sides getting frustrated and start to give away numerous penalties. Which eventually resulted in both being warned about their discipline, as the two sides battled to get the upper hand in the match. It was to be Paula Berry who was to break the deadlock of the 2nd half when she crossed for their only try after the interval, which was her 2nd try of the game. As she once again exploited the holes in the Manchester defence which she does so well, as she raced down the touchline to take her points total to 20 for the match. The two sides battled it out for the remainder of the game before Manchester capitalised on some scrappy play from the Blue Birds to cross for their second try, 5 minutes from time, making the score 45 - 10. The Blue Birds travel to Colne and Nelson on Sunday a confident side, as they will be looking to improve on their positive start to this year's campaign. The only doubt for the game will be Paula Berry who was carried off minutes before the endon Sunday with a leg injury. It is hoped that Sue Baird will be returning to make her first start of the season, as the Blue Birds seek to dominate more ball in the line outs, which was one of their weak points in the game against Manchester. Finally there was more good news for the Blue Birds when it was revealed that their No8 Sam Walker was selected for the County squad following trials at Altringham and Kersall last Sunday.
